What a hectic week last week! Working 13 hours a day on the blob and column with only a lunch and dinner break of 30 minutes each. And the best part is, we have another (similar) week to go!!

Coming Friday is the final presentation and the opening of the exibition, the stone hard deadline! That’s why we’ve been working so hard last days and weeks. Since the structure is finished Govert and Tomas joined me in the quest of sewing while Melissa is working on the light system.

Last week was a weird week, one day a lot of elements would be hanging in the lounge and other days nothing would be visible. This is all due to the fact that sewing takes a lot of time AND that a lot of fabric is sewn together. Right know I’m working on half of the interior cloth. It takes some days, but when it is finally finished half the lounge is completed!
Conclusion: one day being stressed out wether or not we are going to make the deadline, the other day being completely sure we can make it in time. Luckily Tomas and Govert are real ‘Beunhazen’, so they know how to work hard.

The seating elements (in the first ring of the structure) are made out of several pieces of cloth, devided in different cells. I would first draw the points / edges on the floor and aluminum pipes, measure the distance and then draw it on the fabric. Sewing it together, adding velcro tape and hang it!

Thanks to this way of working I’ve invented a new word: Mathematical Sewing! Using mathimathical knowledge of the ways triangles and other shapes work to draw the ultimate fabric piece to sew!

The column (and rest of the interior fabric) is made in the same was as the seating elements. Govert and I spend 2 hours hanging wires in the lounge, measuring the lenght and distrances, draw it, cut it, sew it, hang it. The best part:the shape is exactly as how we wanted it to be!!

So right now our little factory army is working like crazy to finish the interior as soon as possible, and everybody has it own task. In the coming photo’s you can see how slowly everything is going to gether.

As for the deadline: it’s going to be tight.. But if we manage to hang everything with the cloth it’s going to be amazing, I’m sure of that!

This week we also tried some things for the connection points. We came to a conclusion that the lights will only be in the connection points just like the ledworks because the skin panels are not really suited for light. Or to say it differently the result of light in the skin panels was not overwelming and it had not such a good effect.

Snow is falling and tomorrow is Christmas. Just before the fun starts I’ll write you a little update on the Column and Blob of the last 2 weeks of this year.

So finally the cloth arrived and we could start on the sewing. Taking up a day and 3 more days cutting foam the blob is now officially almost finished! We even tested it (while we still have some foam-cutting days ahead of us) and it feels amazing! Way better than a fatboy anyway..

The first layer on the floor is going to be made of the same cloth as well, so a lot of cloth handling in the next weeks. Hopefully the structure is finished after the Winter Break, so I can really start sewing. In 2 weeks time that should be finished so all of us can start on user testing and tweaking the system

Oh! The presentation of friday the 18th was really nice. Our lounge was already in use and I’m quite positive of the end result by the end of January. Keep you posted!

We tested different tipes of gleu, metal wire and tie-rips to assembly the cubs. gleuing wasn’t strong enough and because it also needs to be easy to make it open we choose to assemble the ledwork with tie-rips.

for holding the magnet in place we also tested differed methods off holding it. first we drill a hole that not is to small because if there is to much tension the cup will crack we discovered. In the end kit seems to hold the best.
