Practice of sheets Ⅱ
One model from last week was chosen as the new start point. 10 more variations were developed by changing the cuts. Cutting lines were modified by keeping whole or part of original ones and adding new ones. Same as last week, different positions of joints were assigned and different ways of jointing were applied.

In this diagram, some input parameters- both internal and external- were shown. External parameters include outer environmental factors. Internal parameters concern functions needed in the building. Relative parameters were connected and referred to specific systems.

Practice of sheets
Above is the system used to determine the cuts of square sheets. The system was named border condition. Border here bears two meanings: one is the border of the sheet, namely, the edges of the square. all cuts start from the edges of the sheet; the other means the border between the two cuts on this sheet. it can be diagonal or parallel to the edges.
Two cuts on one sheet can be on the same side of the border (the second meaning) or on the opposite sides. Therefore, four categories are formed: two cuts on the same side of a parallel border, two cuts on the opposite sides of a parallel border, two cuts on the same side of a diagonal border, and two cuts on the opposite sides of a diagonal border.
Considering three kinds of relations between a cut and a border- the cut doesn’t touch the border, the cut just touch the border, and the cut across the border- each category has 6 or 7 possibilities. For those categories which two cuts are on the opposite sides, when the two cuts try to across the border, a distance shift is needed to avoid them from merging into one cut and break the sheet.
Categories with two cuts on the same side has 6 possibilities; and categories with two cuts on the opposite sides has 7 possibilities. All these 26 possibilities can have more variations by changing the lengths of cuts and the distance of shift. So far, two cuts on one sheet are always parallel to each other. Further variations can be created by adding more parameters, such as the angle difference between two cuts.
Several (7 here) cutting patterns were chosen to develop 10 models. Same pattern can have different folding shapes by changing locations of joints and ways of jointing. The location of one joint can be the end-point of a cut, mid-point of a edge or the corner point. Ways of jointing include folding the sheet to make a right angle or make two edges become one by overlapping them.

Monday, September 29th, 2008Now I think, that I can concentrate my design on the canteen element. The room where the people eat their food can be taken from the other group members.
I am going to negotiate with the other organs. They can provide the space I need. I also could take the furniture from Hari in order to provide the students different kinds of socializing. Open space or seduced.
The canteen element is changing between the different states of canteen- as mentioned last Friday. The canteen element is hanging between the other organs.

Sunday, September 28th, 2008the idea of dilating and contracting a simple spring can still apply to the adoptation of this simple module. the controling information will be how the designers are using the design table. the setting for solitude will cause the spring to dilate so as to create a greater distance between different components, and the opposite will occur for the setting for gathering. this will be made possible by varing the length(s) of one arc (or all the arcs) within an individual module. and since the entire studio is going to form a lattice which bears a structure based on the sturctural interdependencies of the individual helices, every single contraction or dilation created by individual working desks will induce a change in overall form of the building. in other words, the status of the designers are configuring the status of the design studio lattice, which will then affect the connection status with other organs.
and small landscapes of the zone for uncertainties will also varies due to the functional choices of the designers.

Okay, the first bit is not exactly on my presentation, but more, part of preparing towards it.
When trying to rationalize my design so far, I was feeling like I was doing something useless. And I wouldn’t want that of course. Therefore, I decided to do some analysis drawings on the total topic of supplying, as shown below. The first three are of the former building for architecture, the last one of the building for industrial design.

From these drawings, I made conclusions, and from these, some goals.
Conclusions from the analysis:
- Everything that supplies, supplies for something or someone
- This something or someone either exists or moves somewhere - usually close to it
- Supplying entities are not uncommonly positioned near to an area of exposition
- Supplying entities can be divided in two kinds of spaces:
- Desks – generally where service can be obtained; porter, e-point, camera-lending-point, service point, icto-desk.
- Rooms – generally where goods can be obtained (some exceptions); printers, copiers, binding, study-advisors, canteen, shop, library, stylos shop, stylos rooms, bouwpub.
presentation
I want:
- An entrance hall (or area) with direct access to centralized supplying functions (branching out, so to speak)
- These supplying entities to be independent units, as if they were little buildings inside the big building (but of course less strict weather protection…)
- The supplying unit should be in the neighbourhood of and oriented to what it supplies for, or oriented so that someone it supplies for, can easily approach it
- Supply-units throughout the building; decentralized supplies
- Entry must be level, for accessibility

Parameters

Rooms should be defined by:
- square meters (decided by its content)
- number, size and orientation of exits/entrances
- stretched or squashed (which one is fit for its function)
- relation to whatever it supplies for

- number of employees working behind it
- number of visitors visiting it
- preferred orientation of the desk
