the analogy of an living organism

we consider the future building for the faculty of architecture as a living organism. it has limbs to reach out on the group plane to welcome and gather people. it has a body to generate knowledge and concepts. it has a heart to supply blood and a brain to memorize everything happened, and to plan ahead.

and, as a living organism,  it should be able to grow. or, more precisely, to carry out “metabolism” - which not only having the scenario of growing, but also shrinking, withering and even dying out.

the position

the organism will mostly cater the flow of people running out from the future tram station. it will stretch its limbs to guide the human flow to the very center of the heart.

the location where the body (the main building) happens will be determined later by a parametric study of human flow on the ground plane according to the 5 entrances identified in the preliminary site studies.

the heart : while people mixed with archives

school is the place to generate knowledge and concepts. the heart of the school basically serves one key function : as the archive of knowledge and concepts generated by the school.
it is an information hub. when people run into the heart of the school, they are running into the the thoughts generated and guiding the school of architecture.

the form

using the analogy of an living organism does not mean that we are taking a form which looks like a living organism. the form-finding exercise will be done in a mostly bottom-top manner, which refers to first determining the formal requirements by individual units.

the framework : the “operation system”

the future building of architecture will be supported primarily by an exoskeleton. this exoskeleton is the parametrized framework which protrudes inward at occasions to deliver secondary structural support.

for the exterior, the exoskeleton is the framework for etfe cushions. for the interior, the exoskeleton turns in and becomes floor and ceiling, and integrates with the internal supply networks of data and services.

we do not read the framework as the boundary of the building. instead, it performs as the operation systems in computer. it lays the foundation for grow, shrink, and adaptation to happen.

growing and shrinking :  “densification” and “sparsification”

while technology emerges there is a emergence of the group hyperbody. while the idea of quantum city sprawls there may be a potential disbelief in urbanism and eventually the department may die out because of that. the hardware of the building has to be able to adopt the shift in paradigms in thoughts.

imagine the interior space of the building as the interior of a bone. the nature of the bone will vary when the quality, quantity and orientation of the internal “bracing” of bone varies.
